Gifting Opportunities

MAKING A GIFT:

Making a gift to Hodan Community Services is easy. Simply write a check and send it to Hodan Community Services, 941 W Fountain St, Mineral Point, WI 53565. Unless you ask us to use your gift for a specific purpose, we will use it to continue our present programs for people with disabilities

You may also designate that your gift be “In Memory Of” or ”In Honor Of” someone special to you. All donors who send gifts, including Honorariums and Memorials, are listed in our Centerline Annual Report.

ENDOWMENT:

You can help ensure our future with a contribution to the Hodan Community Services Endowment.  This perpetual fund, composed of gifts made by individuals, businesses, and organizations, is invested through our affiliation with the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin. There are many ways to give including:

Cash.  A cash gift is the simplest way to give.  You may make a gift by check payable to HCS Endowment.  Or, you can make a credit card gift online at any time.  Simply go to www.cfsw.org, select “Give Now”, complete the form, and choose Hodan Community Services Endowment from the drop-down menu.  You may also authorize an automatic debit from a checking or savings account, per month or per quarter.  ($25 minimum, please).

Appreciated Securities (Stocks, bonds, Mutual Funds). Gifting appreciated securities provides benefits for people who have enjoyed gains in their investments.

Real Estate including Farmland.  Making a charitable gift of real estate can help you turn your property gains into good for Hodan Community Services.

Life Insurance.  Life insurance provides a simple way for you to give a significant gift to charity. Name CFSW/Hodan Community Services as a partial or sole beneficiary.

Bequests.  Including a charitable request in your will is a simple way to make a lasting gift. Contact us for simple language.

IRA rollovers.  The IRA Charitable Rollover is federal legislation that allows individuals to donate up to $100,000 to charities without a tax penalty when given directly to the charity from the retiree’s individual retirement account.  It is possible to direct your “Required Minimum Distribution” (RMD) directly to a charity, thereby excluding the RMD from inclusion in your income.

For questions or to discuss gift options, contact Tom Schraeder, Development Director, HSC, 941 Fountain St. Mineral Point, WI 53565 phone: 608.987.3336 or email:  tschraeder@ hodancs.org

ESTATE PLANNING:

There are many ways a person can help provide for Hodan Community Services future. For instance, Hodan Community Services can be included in a person’s will. If this is the case, it is important to remember that our official name needed for this document is Hodan Community Services, Inc.

The following article was written by our Financial Advisor, Mike Lisle. It is one example of many different kinds of financial vehicles that can help you, as a person who wants to give to others, find the best path to give.

Give the tree, but keep the apples!
What do we mean by this? If we told you there is a way to make a charitable gift, receive income from that gift and have a charitable deduction also, would you be interested?

A method of giving known as the Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (CRAT) is the perfect solution for those people who are philanthropic or care for the mission of a charitable organization, have an asset they can afford to give away, but need the income from that asset. By establishing a CRAT, the donor places the asset such as appreciated stock into the trust. The trust can invest the proceeds to provide income. The donor withdraws an income for life or for a period of time up to 20 years and also receives a charitable deduction that can be used to offset the taxes from the income.

Let’s do a quick example: Suppose Mary, aged 68 has $100,000 in an appreciated stock with a cost basis of $10,000. In establishing a CRAT, she makes the charitable gift to the trust of the $100,000 stock, avoids paying capital gains tax, receives an income of $8,000 annually for life and still receives a charitable gift deduction of nearly $35,000 which could be used now or be spread out over a period of 6 years.

Since Hodan Community Services has recently established an endowment fund a CRAT would be a wonderful gift that would support our goals and help with the endowment fund. For additional information on a CRAT or specific information on your personal situation, please call Tom Schraeder at the Hodan Community Services or speak to your own financial advisor.
